Aspirin can be used to give your dog relief from inflammation and chronic pain, but should always be given with food as it can cause stomach problems, so please take caution. The weight of your dog will determine the amount of aspirin that can be given, but please first check with your vet before giving your dog any medication or aspirin.
Aspirin in dogs is mainly used for treatment of arthritis and other joint pains. If your dog is in pain aspirin can give some relief. Swelling can be reduced with the great anti-inflammatory properties of Aspirin. It is also used for treating pain and fever. This will make your dog feel more comfortable. It is important to remember that a dog is not a human. If your dog looks like it is in pain and not feeling good it doesn’t mean this is a reason to give your dog some aspirin. This is only used as a temporary solution to give your animal some relief from major discomfort. It is best to consult a vet and get medication prescribed for your dog like Rimadyl which acts the same way as aspirin but is safer for dogs.
Caution should be taken when giving your pet any kind of medication. A too large dose of aspirin can be toxic to your dog. Your dog could also not tolerate the medication which could lead to an upset stomach. Aspirin is very toxic to dogs given in high doses. 30mg per pound of dog could be toxic. 320 mg would be very toxic to a 10pound dog. Be very cautious when administering to small breads of dogs. Aspirin is poorly handled by young dogs and cats and should not be given to young animals due to their lack of enzymes needed in the process. Once again we recommend you speak to your veterinarian first.
Gastrointestinal upset and ulcers can be caused by administering aspirin. It is advised to watch your dog closely if they have been given medication to make sure they don’t have an upset stomach. If there are any signs of ulcers, namely blood-tinged vomiting one should immediately stop inducing aspirin. It is recommended to crush up an aspirin with your dog’s food to reduce the chance of damaging the stomach lining.
Tytenol, advil or similar non-aspirin relievers should not be used for dogs and cats and could kill them. These were designed purely for human ingestion.
Dosage recommendations are 5 – 10 mg per pound of the dog’s weight for a 12 hour period. It is always a better idea to use smaller dosages so not to cause any side effects in your dog. Enteric coated aspirin will not work for dogs and isn’t recommended as the coating cannot be dissolved properly by dogs and so the aspirin never gets into the system.
It is best to start off giving smaller doses, if this relieves your dog’s pain then that’s a bonus, if not then slowly increase the amount given. Use the following chart as a guideline only – this is not a medical chart.

Parasites which affect dogs internally are of the worm variety and multiply when absorbed into the dog’s intestines. Tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms are the common ones. These worms occur in dogs faeces and can be acquired by humans. Once absorbed into the dog’s intestines these worms can cause the animal a great deal of stomach pain.
One of the more difficult worms to eradicate is heartworm which if untreated could cause cardiac failure and death to a dog. However, there is medication available which can cure this problem.
Prevention as we all know is better then cure so deworming your dog regularly is the best solution to the problem of any worm infestation they could acquire. There are many treatments available which can eradicate these internal parasites and dogs should be dewormed on a regular basis.

One must be extremely careful about medicines purchased from your drugstore being given to your dog.
Aspirin is dangerous to dogs especially when used indiscriminately.
Depending on what the dog is suffering from there are circumstances where aspirin could be given.
It needs to be stressed however that it is absolutely necessary to have the dog examined and assessed by a veterinarian before any medication purchased over the counter at a drugstore is administered to the animal. Even then the dosage would have to be strictly controlled by someone knowledgeable such as a veterinarian.
A large number of dog owners whose animal are suffering from arthritis and are in pain believe that aspirin can help with the easing of the pain. If this is in fact the case aspirin would help if it is administered by a veterinarian and the correct dosage is given. One should note that aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, non steroidal substance and dogs are extremely susceptible to the side effects of this drug when it is in their gastrointestinal tract.
Effects such as bleeding, development of ulcers or pain and other dog health problems could occur if overdosed with this drug due to the susceptibility of their abdominal area.
At all costs giving aspirin to a dog that is pregnant should be avoided as this action could result in birth defects within the litter. There are safer alternatives then aspirin such as glucosamine and chondroitin which are more preferable to use. Note also that aspirin if given is a substance that can react with certain other drugs in the dog’s body that the animal may be taking such as cortisone, phenobarbitol and certain antibiotics.
In the case of arthritis in dogs the drug cosequin has been known to be effective in cases in helping with the arthritis and any joint difficulties the dog may have. If treating the dog yourself the best bet is to avoid aspirin completely.
Tylenol, Advil and Nadproxen can all cause different problems for dogs so avoid giving them these medications. Liver or kidney disease and ulceration of the dog’s stomach could well result from the indiscriminate use of these medications.

Dogs are as susceptible to eye diseases as are their human counterparts. There are several eye diseases which occur both in dogs and in humans.
Glaucoma is an eye disease which can be genetically transmitted in some breeds of dogs. Basset hounds, chows and cocker spaniels are genetically predisposed towards acquiring this disease.
The disease itself arises because the fluid within the eye which it produces fills it and when there is a problem with the fluid flowing out of the eye, increased intraocular pressure within the eye occurs. As a result of this increased pressure, damage to the retina or optic nerve may be caused. Permanent damage can easily result as a consequence of this but if spotted at an early stage medication could be given to relieve the pressure.
Entropion is a disease which causes the eyelid to curl inwards. Surgery can be performed to resolve this condition and this is normally done when the dog is at least six months old. Canine Pancreatitis is a common disorder in dogs and can manifest itself as being either chronic or acute. The acute form of this disease could be life threatening to the dog. Older overweight dogs are more susceptible to contracting this disease.
It is not known exactly what causes pancreatitis in dogs but what occurs is that the pancreas which is a gland in the dog’s abdomen gets severely inflamed. The pancreas itself assists the body in metabolizing nutrients and sugars that have been consumed. It produces the enzymes which are required to digest food properly and also insulin which help the body to store amino acids and glucose in the body.
There are certain factors that are believed to be the cause of pancreatitis in dogs. Being obese, absorbing contaminated food or water, excessive proportion of fat in the bloodstream of the body, consequences of a viral or bacterial infection, diabetes, absorption of certain drugs or toxins have all been identified as possible causes of canine pancreatitis. A chronic form of this disease also occurs in cats and is often difficult to recognize.
Pancreatitis has no distinct symptoms which make it more recognizable then other digestive problems. Diagnosis of this disease is often determined by a veterinarian who has taken blood samples of the dog which have been sent away to the laboratory for analysis.
Treatment of a dog diagnosed with pancreatitis is supportive. The pancreas needs time to heal itself on its own. Very often a dog would be treated by a veterinarian who would take the animal off being fed orally for several days and thus allow the gastrointestinal system and pancreas time to rest and recover on their own.
Once cured of this disease a dog is normally placed on a high fiber and low fat diet to prevent the disease reoccurring.

Heart disease affects dogs as well as humans. While many dogs have an acquired heart defect or murmur at birth, many other canines develop heart problems when they are middle aged or older.
In dogs, two particular heart diseases have a tendency to occur. One difficulty that occurs is a problem with the heart valves of the dog which do not close effectively thus creating blood flow difficulties.
The other heart condition that is problematical occurs when the walls of the heart muscle in a dog’s heart lose their thickness and become weak and fragile. These occurrences take place over a period of time and can result in the animal having canine heart failure if untreated.
It is estimated that over 3 million dogs in the United States who are treated by veterinarians have an existing heart condition for which they are being treated.
If the heart is unable to pump blood to the body at the rate at which it is required an increased amount of pressure is placed on the heart to meet this requirement. As a consequence of this further harm can be done to the heart.
Dog Heart Symptoms
Heart diseases in dogs can be detected on examination by a veterinarian. In the early stages of heart disease, x-rays would show if the heart was enlarged. Other symptoms such as coughing, the dog laboring when breathing and a general sluggishness in the dogs mobility could be indicators of a developing or existing heart condition.
