Dog Health

Aspirin can be used to give your dog relief from inflammation and chronic pain, but should always be given with food as it can cause stomach problems, so please take caution. The weight of your dog will determine the amount of aspirin that can be given, but please first check with your vet before giving your dog any medication or aspirin.

Aspirin in dogs is mainly used for treatment of arthritis and other joint pains. If your dog is in pain aspirin can give some relief. Swelling can be reduced with the great anti-inflammatory properties of Aspirin. It is also used for treating pain and fever. This will make your dog feel more comfortable. It is important to remember that a dog is not a human. If your dog looks like it is in pain and not feeling good it doesn’t mean this is a reason to give your dog some aspirin. This is only used as a temporary solution to give your animal some relief from major discomfort. It is best to consult a vet and get medication prescribed for your dog like Rimadyl which acts the same way as aspirin but is safer for dogs.

Caution should be taken when giving your pet any kind of medication. A too large dose of aspirin can be toxic to your dog. Your dog could also not tolerate the medication which could lead to an upset stomach. Aspirin is very toxic to dogs given in high doses. 30mg per pound of dog could be toxic. 320 mg would be very toxic to a 10pound dog. Be very cautious when administering to small breads of dogs. Aspirin is poorly handled by young dogs and cats and should not be given to young animals due to their lack of enzymes needed in the process. Once again we recommend you speak to your veterinarian first.

Gastrointestinal upset and ulcers can be caused by administering aspirin. It is advised to watch your dog closely if they have been given medication to make sure they don’t have an upset stomach. If there are any signs of ulcers, namely blood-tinged vomiting one should immediately stop inducing aspirin. It is recommended to crush up an aspirin with your dog’s food to reduce the chance of damaging the stomach lining.

Tytenol, advil or similar non-aspirin relievers should not be used for dogs and cats and could kill them. These were designed purely for human ingestion.

Dosage recommendations are 5 – 10 mg per pound of the dog’s weight for a 12 hour period. It is always a better idea to use smaller dosages so not to cause any side effects in your dog. Enteric coated aspirin will not work for dogs and isn’t recommended as the coating cannot be dissolved properly by dogs and so the aspirin never gets into the system.

It is best to start off giving smaller doses, if this relieves your dog’s pain then that’s a bonus, if not then slowly increase the amount given. Use the following chart as a guideline only – this is not a medical chart.

Weight of dog Dosage every 12 hours (mg)
3.6 kg (8lbs) 40 mg
7.2 kg (16lbs) 80 mg
14.4 kg (32lbs) 160 mg
21.6 kg (48lbs) 240 mg
28.8 kg (64lbs) 320 mg
36 kg (80lbs) 400 mg
43.2 kg (96lbs) 480 mg

The correct dosage can provide your dog with much needed relief just be aware that you need to be very careful with the amount of medication given to your dog so as to avoid any complications. Dogs are not human and should not be given aspirin for minor pains. It is always advisable to speak to your vet before administering any medication to your animals.

dog ticksCanine Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Kennel Cough & Worms

There are a number of bacterial diseases which can be transmitted to dogs by infected ticks. In all the states of America diseases carried by ticks are prevalent and extremely common.

Diseases such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever are amongst the diseases carried by these insects.

Lyme disease which is prevalent throughout the whole of the United States is spread by the deer tick and ixodes pacificus in the western parts of the United States.

Amongst other symptoms this disease causes swelling of the lymph nodes. Rocky Mountain spotted fever and canine ehrlichiosis are diseases that are spread by the brown tick and the dog tick.

There are many bacterial infections which can occur in dogs which are not transmitted but are caused by opportunistic infections which could be a result of a viral infection which the animal had. Many dogs suffer from skin ailments which could also be a result of allergies. There are however bacterial infections which are contagious and can be transmitted by one dog to another. Kennel cough is one of the most common of these diseases.

Dogs that drink water that has been contaminated with urine from an infected wild animal are susceptible to a disease known as leptospirosis. This bacterial infection affects the organs of the dog that has drunk the water namely their liver and kidneys.

A sexually transmitted disease known as Brucellosis can cause an abortion or a stillbirth if contracted by a pregnant bitch. In the case of a male contracting this disease prostrate problems and inflammation in the genitalia would occur.

Parasites such as fleas and ticks can attack both dog and man. Diseases transmitted by ticks to dogs such as Lyme disease have spread rapidly and are extremely prevalent in certain parts of the States. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is another parasitical disease transmitted by infected ticks to dogs. There have been cases where these diseases have been transmitted by dogs to humans especially by a dog bringing within the home environment an infected animal which it has killed. Fortunately today there are many excellent products available which can keep dogs free of fleas and ticks if treated on a regular basis. There are also other parasites which can cause skin infections in dogs such as mange but this can be treated and controlled.

Parasites which affect dogs internally are of the worm variety and multiply when absorbed into the dog’s intestines. Tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms are the common ones. These worms occur in dogs faeces and can be acquired by humans. Once absorbed into the dog’s intestines these worms can cause the animal a great deal of stomach pain.

One of the more difficult worms to eradicate is heartworm which if untreated could cause cardiac failure and death to a dog. However, there is medication available which can cure this problem.

Prevention as we all know is better then cure so deworming your dog regularly is the best solution to the problem of any worm infestation they could acquire. There are many treatments available which can eradicate these internal parasites and dogs should be dewormed on a regular basis.

puppy vaccinationsDogs should be vaccinated against the following diseases;

Young puppies should have a combination vaccination known as DHLP-P which will give them protection against parvovirus, hepatitis, leptospirosis, distemper and parainfluenza. It is also necessary that they receive a booster injection every year.

Distemper is an extremely serious disease which can lead to death unless the animal has been vaccinated. It begins with respiratory problems in the animal which can be followed by seizures and lead to the dog dying.

Leptospirosis is a disease that affects the organs of the animal namely the liver and the kidneys. This disease is not prevalent in dogs.

Parvovirus which attacks the immune system of the dog by destroying the white blood cells is a deadly disease. The Doberman and Rottweiler breeds of dogs are particularly susceptible to contracting this disease and in smaller dogs especially the mortality rate can be as high as 1 in 4. Continuous retching and bloody stools as well as severe hydration are serious consequences of this disease.

It is important to have young puppies vaccinated against rabies when they are between 4 – 6 months of age. Older dogs normally would receive a rabies vaccination on a yearly basis. This is a viral disease that is deadly on the central nervous system of the animal and is a public health threat if not contained.

Dogs that are boarded at kennels on a regular basis or who often come into contact with other dogs e.g. at grooming parlors should be given a bordetella vaccination as a protective measure. This disease also known as kennel cough affects the respiratory system of the animal and causes it cough. It is a highly contagious airborne disease

Booster injections are also available as and when they are necessary. Consult your veterinarian as to how often they should be given.

Vaccinations against Coronavirus should be given to young puppies and an annual booster injection should follow. This intestinal disease leads to peritonitis.

It is always best to consult your veterinarian for dog health advice as to how often vaccinations should be given depending on what has already been administered and at what age. It should not be underestimated how essential vaccinations for certain diseases are. Neglecting them or the follow up booster injections could have devastating and fatal consequences for your animal.

One must be extremely careful about medicines purchased from your drugstore being given to your dog.

Aspirin is dangerous to dogs especially when used indiscriminately.

Depending on what the dog is suffering from there are circumstances where aspirin could be given.

It needs to be stressed however that it is absolutely necessary to have the dog examined and assessed by a veterinarian before any medication purchased over the counter at a drugstore is administered to the animal. Even then the dosage would have to be strictly controlled by someone knowledgeable such as a veterinarian.

A large number of dog owners whose animal are suffering from arthritis and are in pain believe that aspirin can help with the easing of the pain. If this is in fact the case aspirin would help if it is administered by a veterinarian and the correct dosage is given. One should note that aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, non steroidal substance and dogs are extremely susceptible to the side effects of this drug when it is in their gastrointestinal tract.

Effects such as bleeding, development of ulcers or pain and other dog health problems could occur if overdosed with this drug due to the susceptibility of their abdominal area.

At all costs giving aspirin to a dog that is pregnant should be avoided as this action could result in birth defects within the litter. There are safer alternatives then aspirin such as glucosamine and chondroitin which are more preferable to use. Note also that aspirin if given is a substance that can react with certain other drugs in the dog’s body that the animal may be taking such as cortisone, phenobarbitol and certain antibiotics.

In the case of arthritis in dogs the drug cosequin has been known to be effective in cases in helping with the arthritis and any joint difficulties the dog may have. If treating the dog yourself the best bet is to avoid aspirin completely.

Tylenol, Advil and Nadproxen can all cause different problems for dogs so avoid giving them these medications. Liver or kidney disease and ulceration of the dog’s stomach could well result from the indiscriminate use of these medications.

Genetic DiseasesCommon Genetic Diseases in Dogs

Pedigreed dogs are particularly vulnerable to genetic diseases and as a result of this some breeds are unable to be registered with a large number of national kennel clubs.

Different breeds of dogs inherit genetic problems relating to their specific breed. Some of the common genetic defects are hip dysplasia which most often occurs in the larger breed of dogs.

A disease which affects blood platelets known as Willebrand disease is known to be prevalent in Doberman Pinschers.

A disease which causes the eyelids of a dog to curl known as entropion occurs in Shar Peis and also other breeds of dogs.

Many pedigreed breeds of dogs have a genetic disorder known as progressive retinal atrophy, a dog sickness which affects their eyesight and as they age gets progressively worse.

Epilepsy and deafness are inherited disorders which often occur in St Bernard, German Shepherds and Cocker Spaniels.

A serious genetic heart related problem occurs in Golden Retrievers and some other large breeds such as the Newfoundland Dog which disrupts the flow of blood from the heart to the Aorta and could result in cardiac arrest and the death of the dog.

Pedigreed Collie dogs can inherit a genetic disease which prevents their nervous system from functioning and developing properly. If two of these dogs with the same inherited disorder were mated, any puppies which were born would almost certainly, if they survived, have damage to their organs and nervous systems.

dog with cancerDogs like humans can develop both benign and malignant tumors. Some of the most common tumors seen in dogs are melanomas, lymphoma, bone cancer.

Mast cell tumors can occur in all the different breeds of dogs irrespective of their age. Tumors may appear to be benign in appearance, but could ultimately turn out to be malignant.

The mast cells are a part of the immune system of the body and their cells are located in the tissues and skin of the body. In instances where a mast cell tumor appears if it is correctly recognized and treated it can be managed. Some of these tumors are able to be removed safely and even though they are small in appearance they could if ignored lead to a serious cancer developing in the dog.

Lymphoma which affects organs of the body such as the liver, spleen , kidneys and other organs has in many instances by using chemotherapy led to an extension of the dog’s lifespan sometimes by many months and in some instances by a number of years. Lymphoma cancer often manifests itself in the form of lumps or swellings on the body of the dog.

As with other genetic diseases certain large breeds of dogs are susceptible to certain cancers. The Golden Retriever is a breed of dog that is prone to lymphoma cancer which could shorten its life. There is a mortality rate of about ten percent if this animal contracts the cancer. Other breeds of dog such as Boxers and Pugs have a tendency to develop mast cell tumors. One breed of dog that stands a very high risk of developing a cancer of the bladder is the Scottish Terrier. Dogs which have unpigmented skin on their noses are susceptible to developing cancer if they have too much exposure to sunlight.

swollen eye dogDog Eye Health

Dogs are as susceptible to eye diseases as are their human counterparts. There are several eye diseases which occur both in dogs and in humans.

Glaucoma is an eye disease which can be genetically transmitted in some breeds of dogs. Basset hounds, chows and cocker spaniels are genetically predisposed towards acquiring this disease.

The disease itself arises because the fluid within the eye which it produces fills it and when there is a problem with the fluid flowing out of the eye, increased intraocular pressure within the eye occurs. As a result of this increased pressure, damage to the retina or optic nerve may be caused. Permanent damage can easily result as a consequence of this but if spotted at an early stage medication could be given to relieve the pressure.

Entropion is a disease which causes the eyelid to curl inwards. Surgery can be performed to resolve this condition and this is normally done when the dog is at least six months old. It requires both the removal of some skin and muscle to realign the eyelids. When the dog matures as an adult it may sometimes be necessary to repeat this procedure.

Eye diseases which affect dogs are progressive retinal atrophy, cherry eye and collie eye anomaly. A degenerative disease of the retina in dogs can lead to the development of corneal ulcers.

As with other dog diseases, pedigreed dogs are more susceptible to inherit a genetically transmitted eye disease. Cataracts fall into this category but they can also be a result of the animal suffering from diabetes.

Cataracts are found in many breeds of dogs and can also be caused by trauma, inflammation or substitutes given to puppy for mother’s milk. Very often dogs can acquire an allergic reaction to a developing cataract resulting in scars and glaucoma. An eye disease which can develop as the animal ages is known as nuclear sclerosis.

Gastrointestinal diseases often occur in dogs especially because of the indiscriminate manner in which they consume anything which is edible. The consequences of this behavior often results in the animal vomiting and having loose stools.

There have been many instances where a dog has eaten something which has caused a severe blockage to its gastrointestinal tract.

Canine Pancreatitis is a common disorder in dogs and can manifest itself as being either chronic or acute. The acute form of this disease could be life threatening to the dog. Older overweight dogs are more susceptible to contracting this disease.

It is not known exactly what causes pancreatitis in dogs but what occurs is that the pancreas which is a gland in the dog’s abdomen gets severely inflamed. The pancreas itself assists the body in metabolizing nutrients and sugars that have been consumed. It produces the enzymes which are required to digest food properly and also insulin which help the body to store amino acids and glucose in the body.

There are certain factors that are believed to be the cause of pancreatitis in dogs. Being obese, absorbing contaminated food or water, excessive proportion of fat in the bloodstream of the body, consequences of a viral or bacterial infection, diabetes, absorption of certain drugs or toxins have all been identified as possible causes of canine pancreatitis. A chronic form of this disease also occurs in cats and is often difficult to recognize.

Pancreatitis has no distinct symptoms which make it more recognizable then other digestive problems. Diagnosis of this disease is often determined by a veterinarian who has taken blood samples of the dog which have been sent away to the laboratory for analysis.

Treatment of a dog diagnosed with pancreatitis is supportive. The pancreas needs time to heal itself on its own. Very often a dog would be treated by a veterinarian who would take the animal off being fed orally for several days and thus allow the gastrointestinal system and pancreas time to rest and recover on their own.

Once cured of this disease a dog is normally placed on a high fiber and low fat diet to prevent the disease reoccurring.

Canine Pancreatitis–Do You Feed Your Dog Table Scraps?

These symptoms also belong to many other diseases, but if you suspect pancreatitis, take your dog to a vet immediately. Generally, high amounts of fat, a high-fat meal, the dog feeding out of the garbage can lead to canine pancreatitis.

Canine Pancreatitis

Canine pancreatitis is potentially a life-threatening disease for typically middle-aged to older female dogs. The pancreas is a gland that functions as part of the digestive process.

Pancreatitis in dogs

Treatment Most cases of canine pancreatitis require hospitalized treatment for a minimum of three to four days, and sometimes much longer. There are several goals to the treatment of pancreatitis in dogs.

Diagnosing pancreatic disease in Pets

The laboratory diagnosis of canine pancreatitis is complicated by the fact that amylase and lipase quickly return to normal following the onset of clinical signs so normal results need not exclude pancreatitis.

Canine Pancreatitis Diet

If your dog has pancreatitis, he will be required to eat a specific canine pancreatitis diet. This special diet will help them control their disease.

Question Regarding Canine Kidney Disease Diet

These can include pancreatitis, anemia, heart disease, liver issues, allergies, etc. It is not advisable to use a recipe or commercial diet intended for any pet with kidney disease because it may not be the right one for your pet.

canine heart murmursCanine Heart Disease

Heart disease affects dogs as well as humans. While many dogs have an acquired heart defect or murmur at birth, many other canines develop heart problems when they are middle aged or older.

In dogs, two particular heart diseases have a tendency to occur. One difficulty that occurs is a problem with the heart valves of the dog which do not close effectively thus creating blood flow difficulties.

The other heart condition that is problematical occurs when the walls of the heart muscle in a dog’s heart lose their thickness and become weak and fragile. These occurrences take place over a period of time and can result in the animal having canine heart failure if untreated.

It is estimated that over 3 million dogs in the United States who are treated by veterinarians have an existing heart condition for which they are being treated.

If the heart is unable to pump blood to the body at the rate at which it is required an increased amount of pressure is placed on the heart to meet this requirement. As a consequence of this further harm can be done to the heart.

Dog Heart Symptoms

Heart diseases in dogs can be detected on examination by a veterinarian. In the early stages of heart disease, x-rays would show if the heart was enlarged. Other symptoms such as coughing, the dog laboring when breathing and a general sluggishness in the dogs mobility could be indicators of a developing or existing heart condition.

As with any other dog diseases, early detection of canine heart problems could prevent serious heart problems in the dog before it’s too late. Owners should therefore be encouraged to have their animals checked out at regular intervals by a veterinarian.

Regular exercise, good nutrition and a well balanced diet are important factors in keeping your dog’s heart healthy. A dog in good shape that has been well cared for and is in good condition will give its owner many years of happiness and companionship.
