Animal Hospital

You would of never of guessed it but the day has come where you are finally witness to one of the most bizarre inventions of our time. Pet Airways is an airline dedicated to transport pets from place to place. By the end of the year the business wants to be recognised on a world wide scale.

This is not going to be easy but I strongly think it is possible. OK - It may be a bit of a crazy idea but this business idea has some real potential and I want to see how they are going to develop their business in the future months and years.
Many doctors in the field are worried that putting that much strain on animals will cause an increase in heart problems. Pet airways have already announced that there will be an on board animal cardiology vet to take care of any flight trouble. Considering that high altitude could affect the health of the animals it is very crucial to consider every possibility.

At the moment, Pet Airways serves New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles and charges just £91 for a one way fare which is very competitive against the US Airlines prices to take your animal on a flight.

Pet Airways offers a very different service than anything else you have seen before. Dogs and cats alike will be loaded into a normal looking plane with carriers instead of seats. The animals, up to 50 at a time will be escorted to the plane by attendants who will check them every 15 minutes during the flight to make sure they are ok. Local animal hospitals from around the area have been in support over the idea to take animals in the sky by plane and think it is a great idea.

The idea is to add more destinations on to their flight schedule as soon as possible. Within the next year, Binder hopes to develop over 25 desitinations onto their current roster.

They treat animals, no matter how big, small or exotic to try and keep them well, but just what does becoming a vet involve?

It can take just as long to become a veterinary surgeon as it can to become a docotor, as after school you need to attend four years of college and then four years of veterinary school to begin with. Getting a placement at an animal hospital can help with credit, but it wont make your time any shorter actually in college. In the USA alone there are only twenty eight vet schools, so youll have to fight off many other people in order to get in. You will learn about the different illnesses and also the numerous amounts of different animal species you may have to treat. A vet will have to learn many more anatomies than just a doctor will -canines, felines and other speices will come up. This is without even including the fact that you may want to consider specialising in a particular speices. The final exam is similar to the bar exam that is taken by lawyers, which you need to pass in order to treat animals, this is then followed up by a state exam. Completing the state veterinary exam does automaticall mean you can ply ‘your trade’ in all fifty states, so choose which state you want to do this in before taking it.

Becoming a vet will mean your constantly trying to stay ahead of the curve and learning alot of new methods and information in your own time. You will also need to pledge to help animals and take the veterinary version of a doctors oath. There are long hours involved with being a vet, yet the hardest thing will be to put an animal you cannot save out of its misery. Keep that in mind if your going to have a hard time with that.

Still interested? It sounds like you may have found your ideal job.

My best friend’s cat passed away last week. Needless to say she was more than a little upset, but then he wasn’t just a cat he was part of her family. He was a companion, a confidant and a friend. She only found out he was ill about a month ago when she took him to the vets in Sussex and they found a lump in his stomach, she would have done anything and paid any amount of money to save him but unfortunately they had found it too late.

In the end the decision was out of my friend’s control, but for a lot of people when their pets get ill or are injured they are faced with a horrible decision. Obviously there is no such thing as NHS for pets, and for those who don’t have pet insurance it’s an extremely costly business (my friend paid almost £90 for a blood test that didn’t even help to identify the problem). Of course most people would do anything to save their pets and money isn’t an issue when it comes to such an important member of the family.

And for those who can afford it there is no end of veterinary help available, from basic medicines and physiotherapy for pets to specific animal cardiology and ophthalmology facilities. If the illness can be treated it will be treated, and there is every chance that the unfortunate animal will make a full recovery. But what happens when a pet is suddenly injured or taken ill and their owner can’t afford to foot the (often massive) bill? It’s hardly fair that one innocent animal’s life takes priority over another because of the size of their owners’ wallets.

One young cat owner from Brighton took a unique approach to tackling this problem when his beloved cat Mumble was seriously hurt in the street and needed urgent treatment to survive. Rory O’Connor had no pet insurance, and Mumble’s treatment at a veterinary hospital in Sussex was estimated at around £1000, much more than he could afford, but he couldn’t bear to just watch her suffer. So as what he called a ‘last ditch effort’ Rory decided to start a group on Facebook called ‘Save Mumble’, inviting all his friends to spread the word about Mumble’s unfortunate plight and asking everyone to make donations of £1. At first he thought he’d have no chance of success but his desperate plea touched the hearts of thousands of facebook users. People on his friends list told all their friends about it, and within a short couple of weeks he had raised enough money to pay the bill for Mumble’s treatment in full. She made a full and speedy recovery, and all thanks to the overwhelming support of friends and the power of social networking!

Unsure of what pet to get- heres a few bullet points about a few animals you may consider.

  • Cats. Cats dont need to be taken out for walks, are well groomed and quiet animals (except when they want feeding). Their nocturnal animals so they only really come to life at night, going out to bring you back live mice as a present bless ‘em. Cats will cost alittle less than a dog because cats dont require the training that a dog has, but thats only alittle less.
  • Dogs. Do they deserve the title ‘mans best friend’? A dog requires being taken for a walk every day, if not every other day, which can be great exercise for both dog and owner. Dogs are going to need some training, but are very loyal animals to their owners (or their pet!!).
  • Rodents. Mice, Hamsters, Gerbils and Rats. The little critters can go on for about a year and a half, though dont be surprised if they go on for alittle longer. the right sized cage is important -rats are the bigger rodent and mice may escape through bigger holes in the bars. Remember a wheel for exercise, but replace it if it starts squeaking so your not kept up all night.
  • Rabbits and Guinea pigs. Both can move quicker than you think, so be prepared to chase them around the garden. Either animal will require a hutch to stay in, plus a run for them to enjoy in the summer, but not escaping from the garden. Give them fresh lettuce/ carrots to go with their feed, and you must move their hutches into somewhere warm when winter sets in.
  • Snakes. A snake can be very costly given the accommodation they need, they equipment to control the temperature and mice for them to eat. The cost of the snake is going to depend on the size of the snake.
  • Spiders. A spider will require a container to keep it in (with breathing holes!) a steady supply of bugs to be eaten and a spouse that wont panic when they escape.
