What does it take t become a vet?
They treat animals, no matter how big, small or exotic to try and keep them well, but just what does becoming a vet involve?
It can take just as long to become a veterinary surgeon as it can to become a docotor, as after school you need to attend four years of college and then four years of veterinary school to begin with. Getting a placement at an animal hospital can help with credit, but it wont make your time any shorter actually in college. In the USA alone there are only twenty eight vet schools, so youll have to fight off many other people in order to get in. You will learn about the different illnesses and also the numerous amounts of different animal species you may have to treat. A vet will have to learn many more anatomies than just a doctor will -canines, felines and other speices will come up. This is without even including the fact that you may want to consider specialising in a particular speices. The final exam is similar to the bar exam that is taken by lawyers, which you need to pass in order to treat animals, this is then followed up by a state exam. Completing the state veterinary exam does automaticall mean you can ply ‘your trade’ in all fifty states, so choose which state you want to do this in before taking it.
Becoming a vet will mean your constantly trying to stay ahead of the curve and learning alot of new methods and information in your own time. You will also need to pledge to help animals and take the veterinary version of a doctors oath. There are long hours involved with being a vet, yet the hardest thing will be to put an animal you cannot save out of its misery. Keep that in mind if your going to have a hard time with that.
